Bob Hopkins 2023/24 AGM Speech

Dundee H SFPCC - 2023/2024 AGM President's Speech

2023 was a momentous and cataclysmic season.

After relegation in 2022 we also had the school’s decision to withdraw from maintaining the square to contend with. However a great deal of hard work by the players had the square rolled and ready to go by mid-April and Les Milne stepped up as the main groundsman, cutting and having excellent wickets ready for play in advance of time.

We had previously decided to look for 2 Australians to regain our position in the North East Championship and we struck it lucky with Angus and Brock - both enjoyed themselves, worked hard, and are set to return for another season.

On the pitch after a slow start from the 1sts, things improved, and barring a rain-affected match we should have been in pole position - however decision by the SPCU Management Committee in removing the award of bonus points for the losing team in a Rain Calculator/Duckworth Lewis Match, ultimately cost us the league by 2 points. A couple of poor displays mid-season also came home to roost. However, the main target of promotion was achieved and we should all be proud of the efforts put in by all to what was an excellent season.

The 2nd’s season was perhaps very much as expected – with a mix of results coming in a league of a notably higher standard than expected. The main plus points were the ability to field a competitive team week in / week out, which will be significantly stronger next year as our excellent crop of juniors comes to maturity. Playing in the 2nd's and 3rd's last year will stand them well for next season when the 2nd's may well look a younger and leaner side!

On Sundays again a team was fielded on every occasion giving the juniors more exposure.
With this reference to juniors, we should take the time to thank Graham Hopkins and Kevin Ancell for the excellent work put in - with 3 members being selected for inclusion in Caley Under 15 squad. There are quite a few others just a touch behind - they may well figure in the later stages of some of the national competitions this coming season.

Lastly, a mention on finances. While breaking even last year the turnover of the club increased from around £8k to £16,000 - a large amount for our club to raise. We achieved this but it is an ongoing situation with funds and support needed from all members, parents etc.

Lastly to close with Sir Henry Newbolt’s famous words-

There’s a breathless hush in the Close to-night —
Ten to make and the match to win —
A bumping pitch and a blinding light,
An hour to play and the last man in.
Play, Play Up-and play the game.

Bob Hopkins, President, DHSFPCC
